A charity in New York must repay the city $625,000 after making an improper loan to a liberal radio network, reports The New York Times.
The Gloria Wise Community Center, formerly known as the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club, received $875,000 in grants from the city’s Department of Youth and Community Development, Department for the Aging, and Department of Education. The money was supposed to be spent on services for children and the elderly. Instead, the charity loaned the money to Air America Radio. Of the $875,000, $250,000 has been returned to the charity for its operations and the rest must go back to the city.
The current management of both the charity, which has a new board of directors and chief executive, and the radio network say they are happy to have the case resolved. But the state is still investigating the community center, and the case has been transferred to the criminal investigations bureau, reports the newspaper.
