N.Y. Investigating Use of 9/11 Fund

The New York state attorney’s office is investigating how a police union spent $15-million raised after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, sources told the Daily News, in New York.

The money was collected by the New York State Fraternal Order of Police Foundation to help support families of victims or police who have health problems related to the attacks.

The state is investigating why the foundation has not yet distributed $7-million of the fund, whether it used almost $1-million to build its new headquarters, and whether it inappropriately made unrestricted grants totaling $600,000 to two other organizations.

“Nothing criminal or fraudulent took place, and the state knows this,” says Gregory Kuczinski, a lawyer representing the foundation and the state Fraternal Order of Police. “We have a disagreement with the attorney general’s office in what we can do with the money.”
