The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York, has received a gift of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints from the Pierre and Maria-Gaetana Matisse Charitable Foundation, in New York. The total value of the gift is estimated to be at least $75-million, according to Paul Roy, a lawyer for the foundation.
The collection includes works by noted figures in modern art such as Marc Chagall, André Derain, Jean Dubuffet, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, and Henri Matisse — Mr. Matisse’s father. The foundation was established by Maria-Gaetana Matisse in 1995, six years after the death of her husband. Mrs. Matisse died in April 2001.
