NY Soup Kitchen Offers Gourmet Cooking

December 20, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

One of the more notable dining experiences in New York is the soup kitchen at the Broadway Presbyterian Church, which serves meals featuring such gourmet ingredients as New Jersey bison, white asparagus, and octopus, reports The New York Times.

The kitchen’s cook, Michael Ennes, once dreamed of being a gourmet chef and briefly owned a restaurant in New York. When it closed, he turned to nonprofit work. “I could have spent my life pampering the rich, which is a fine art,” he said. “But I think I’ve found where I belong.”

The kitchen receives much of its food from City Harvest, a nonprofit group that collects leftovers from 150 high-end restaurants. In addition to using that food, Mr. Ennes makes his meals healthy by cutting out trans fats and buying local produce when possible.
