New York state senator Efrain González Jr. has been charged with misappropriating more than $400,000 in state money intended for charities, reports The New York Times.
Mr. González allegedly directed the money through two nonprofit organizations, the West Bronx Neighborhood Association and the United Latin American Foundation, then used the funds to finance personal expenses for himself and his family, according to federal prosecutors. They said expenses included money to support Mr. González’s private cigar company, to pay vacation-club fees, and to buy jewelry.
Four months ago, Mr. González was indicted on charges that he stole $37,000 from a nonprofit organization.
Mr. González told reporters he was innocent.
