NYC Marathon Reduces Charity Spots for 2014 Race

October 13, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

New York City Marathon organizers have reduced the number of slots available to runners raising money for charity, saying many nonprofit groups are struggling to fill the spots to which they committed, writes The Wall Street Journal. New York Road Runners, the nonprofit that manages the race, cut charity slots for the November 2 event to about 7,000, down by several hundred from past years, and trimmed its slate of charity partners from 320 to 290.

Some participating charities fell short of filling their slots last year, when the marathon offered automatic entry to everyone who had registered for the 2012 race that was canceled due to Hurricane Sandy. With so many runners already in, groups had to scramble to find people to take their allotted bibs. Runners and charities must purchase slots ahead of time from the Road Runners.
