Andrew Swinney, who oversaw major growth at the Philadelphia Foundation while serving for 16 years as its president, died Sunday at age 67, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. He had been ill for a year with ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Mr. Swinney retired on June 30 from the foundation, which manages charitable trust funds in southeastern Pennsylvania. During his tenure, the grant maker’s assets increased from $148 million in 1998 to $370 million, with 78 percent of the money endowed, and the number of component funds more than quadrupled. Before coming to Philadelphia, he spent seven years as director of the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation in Wisconsin.
