Obituary: Former Ford Foundation Economist Dies
August 1, 2006
Louis Winnick, an economist whose recommendations influenced the Ford Foundation to focus on low-cost housing, low-interest loans, and minority enterprise, died on July 29 at the age of 85, reports the Associated Press.
Mr. Winnick came to Ford in 1962 and became deputy vice president in the national-affairs division in 1968, a position he held until 1986.
He encouraged the foundation to begin investing in poor urban neighborhoods through loans and equity investments, rather than simply through grants, a move that shaped lending practices to help the poor nationwide.
