May 30, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute
Gilbert D. Mead, 76, a retired NASA physicist and an heir to a paper manufacturing fortune who, along with his wife, Jaylee, became one of the most prolific arts philanthropists in Washington, died May 29 of complications related to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, The Washington Post reports.
Mr. Mead and his wife have given more than $50-million to theaters in the Washington region and elsewhere. The Meads made their biggest donation last year when they pledged $35-million to Arena Stage as part of the Washington theater company’s $120-million building and renovation campaign.
The Meads ranked No. 50 on The Chronicle’s ranking of the most-generous donors of 2006.
