Obituary: Jerry Falwell, Evangelist, Dies at 73

May 15, 2007

Jerry Falwell, a conservative television evangelist who founded the Moral Majority and Liberty University, died on Tuesday after being found unconscious in his office at the university, reports the Associated Press. He was 73.

The Christian fundamentalist church he founded in 1953 in an abandoned bottling plant now has 22,000 members. Mr. Falwell founded Liberty University, formerly Lynchburg Baptist College, in 1971, and the Moral Majority, a powerful conservative lobbying organization, in 1979.

Liberty University announced last year that it was running a $1-billion capital campaign.
