OBITUARY: NORTON A. KIRITZ

Norton J. Kiritz, 70, who founded the Grantsmanship Center, a Los Angeles group that has trained at least 100,000 nonprofit and government officials how to write grant proposals, died of cancer on January 30 in Los Angeles, reports the Los Angeles Times. Mr. Kiritz developed a method for grant-proposal writing and a five-day workshop on the basics of grant seeking after he got experience of his own leading a community-action group in Los Angeles. In 1977, five years after the center opened, two-thirds of grants applications drafted by workshop graduates were successful in winning money from governments or foundations, the newspaper says. Mr. Kiritz defined grantsmanship as “never having to say you’re broke,” the newspaper said.
