Ohio Churches’ Political Activities Under Fire

April 25, 2006

A group of clergy members who have filed complaints challenging the tax-exempt status of two Ohio churches are frustrated that the Internal Revenue Service has been slow to look into the matter, reports The Washington Post.

Marc Owens, a lawyer for the clergymen, says he suspects the churches are receiving favorable treatment from the IRS. An official with the agency denied the charge, saying the IRS treats all organizations equally.

The churches—World Harvest Church and Fairfield Christian Church—are accused of inappropriately promoting a Republican candidate for governor. The churches attribute the complaints to disagreements and partisan politics.
