Ohio State Gets $6.5-Million From Couple; Other Gifts

Two groups have received large gifts:
- The Ohio State University, in Columbus, has received $6.5-million from Mae McCorkle and her husband, William, an alumnus, to construct a swimming and diving facility. The couple co-founded McCorkle Inc. Realtors, in Columbus.
- The New York City Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has received $6.2-million from a family in New York to support grants for research projects. The family asked that the charity not disclose its name.
Other recent gifts:
Boston U.: $1-million from Joyce Wein and her husband, George, an alumnus, founder of the Newport Jazz Festival and chief executive officer of Festival Productions, in New York, to endow a chair in African-American studies.
Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (Hollywood, Fla.): $1-million from Deborah Rand and her husband, William, the founder and director of the Rand Eye Institute, in Pompano Beach, Fla., for diabetes research.
Johns Hopkins U. (Baltimore): $1.4-million from the estate of Virginia L. Gladding, of Baltimore, to support scholarships for female undergraduate and graduate students.
Lake Superior State U. (Sault Sainte Marie, Mich.): $1.1-million in the form of a pledge and a charitable remainder trust from an anonymous donor, to construct an arts center.
McLean Hospital (Belmont, Mass.): $2.5-million from the Klarman family of Brookline, Mass., to establish a center to treat young women with eating disorders.
Meredith College (Raleigh, N.C.): $1-million in the form of a charitable remainder trust and other gifts from the family of Vida Lee Senter and her late husband, John, a former trustee, both of Lillington, N.C., for scholarships.
North Carolina A&T State U. (Greensboro): $1.1-million in land and other assets from Velma Speight-Buford, a retired high-school teacher and former director of alumni affairs at the university.
Saint Agnes Medical Center Foundation (Fresno, Calif.): $3-million from Larry Shehadey, general manager of Producers Dairy Foods, in Fresno, to support the hospital’s expansion.
U. of California at Riverside: $1-million anonymous gift from a member of the university foundation’s Board of Trustees, to help construct a building for the College of Engineering.
