One Volunteer’s African Journey

Kelsi Stine, a student at Tufts University, is embarking on an international adventure this summer, spending a month volunteering with Population Caring Organization at a Ghanaian refugee camp that serves 38,000 Liberians displaced by their homeland’s civil war.
Ms. Stine is writing about her experience on her blog, which is named after the camp she will be visiting, the Buduburam Refugee Settlement.
As she prepares for her departure this week, Ms. Stine writes she is nervous about the culture shock, the threat of malaria, and other challenges of working in Africa. But she looks forward to applying her school work in international relations and peace studies to the real world.
“I am thrilled about volunteering this summer, and know that it will provide me with the intense personal and intellectual growth that I am looking for,” she writes.
