Over 40 Nonprofit Officials and Experts to Testify on Charitable Deduction

More than 40 nonprofit leaders and experts are scheduled to testify on Thursday at a Congressional hearing on proposals to modify the charitable deduction.

The House Ways and Means Committee, sponsor of the hearing, will receive testimony from representatives of trade associations including the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Council on Foundations, Independent Sector, and National Council of Nonprofits and charities including the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions, Meals on Wheels, and Volunteers of America.

A dozen representatives of United Way will also testify, including Brian Gallagher, president of United Way Worldwide, and leaders of local groups from across the country who are in Washington to attend a meeting of the organization’s members.

Rep. Dave Camp, the Michigan Republican who chairs the Ways and Means Committee, said he scheduled the hearing to “hear directly from the charitable community” about proposals to change or limit the deduction as part of the debates over government spending and overhauling the tax code.
