Illinois Nonprofits: a Profile of Charities and Advocacy Organizations, by Kirsten A. Grnbjerg and Curtis Child, summarizes the results of a survey of 875 nonprofit organizations in Illinois. Ms. Grnbjerg, a professor at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana U., in Indianapolis, and Mr. Child, a research associate at Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs, in Indianapolis, provide information about the size, age, and types of organizations in the state. The report also discusses challenges facing nonprofit groups. More than half of the respondents say that the demand for their services has increased during the last three years, while 60 percent say that obtaining adequate financing is a major challenge. Among other findings, the authors note that 29 percent of Illinois nonprofit organizations surveyed participate in advocacy or political activity.
