Pakistani Clerics Oppose Female Aid Workers
July 26, 2006
Muslim clerics in Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province want local authorities to expel all women working for international relief agencies in earthquake-affected areas by the end of this month, reports Reuters.
The clerics accuse the women of dressing improperly, mixing with men, and drinking alcohol. Police said that aid workers will be protected while they work with the clerics to settle the issue, and have encouraged employees of foreign nonprofit organizations to be sensitive to local culture.
