A report by a committee of British members of Parliament warns charities that their fundraising activities could be controlled by law unless they prove that self-regulation can help reform solicitation practices, the BBC reports.
In respose to a series of scandals over serial solicitations of elderly and vulnerable people in Britain, the government ordered a review that recommended establishing the new fundraising regulator. The new report blames charity trustees for permitting high-pressive fundraising practices.
The government officials called this the “last chance” for charity leaders to get their affairs in order and prove that self-regulation is effective in reducing aggressive fundraising tactics.
