Patrick T. McCarthy, President, Annie E. Casey Foundation

March 7, 2010 | Read Time: 1 minute

Background: Mr. McCarthy, 60, who will assume his new role in April, was first hired in 1994 by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, in Baltimore, which works to improve the lives of poor children. For the past year-and-a-half, he has served as its senior vice president. Previously, he served as a senior program officer at the Center for Assessment and Policy Development, in Bala Cynwyd, Pa., and has worked in state government and as a professor of social work.

Education: He holds a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Manhattan College, in New York, a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctorate degree from Bryn Mawr College’s Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research.

Why he was chosen: Michael L. Eskew, board chair of Annie E. Casey, says Mr. McCarthy impressed the board as the best person to replace the departing chief executive, Douglas W. Nelson, because he is someone who knows the foundation well but isn’t afraid to make changes. Mr. Eskew says, “We knew that he and his team would always push to do better and better and be constructively dissatisfied.”

His agenda: Mr. McCarthy will work to help the foundation’s grantees become more influential advocates and ensure that successful projects are adopted in other places.

Salary: Mr. McCarthy would not reveal his compensation.
