In what is believed to be the largest donation from an individual to an American opera company, a longtime patron of the San Francisco Opera has given that organization $35-million, reports The San Francisco Chronicle.
Ten million dollars of Jeannik Mequet Littlefield’s unrestricted donation will support operating expenses at the opera, and the remaining $25-million will go to the organization’s $90-million endowment.
Ms. Littlefield, the widow of industrialist Edmund Wattis Littlefield, was on the opera’s board of directors from 1977 to 1992.
“I felt it was important to make a commitment while I was able to do so and see it enjoyed by so many people,” Ms. Littlefield said.
