Pay for Top College Fund Raisers Remains Flat, Says New Report

March 7, 2010 | Read Time: 1 minute

Even though the median pay for chief fund raisers at colleges and universities stayed essentially flat—rising by a mere 0.3 percent in the current academic year over 2008-9—the figure still stayed ahead of inflation, according to a new survey.

Chief development officers at higher-education institutions are making a median $142,161 in 2009-10, meaning that half are making more and half are making less. That figure compares with the $141,712 pay level in the previous academic year, according to a study by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, in Knoxville, Tenn.

Inflation for 2009 was negative 0.4 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Signs of Stability

This year’s survey of salaries of 280 staff positions, including those at doctoral, master’s, baccalaureate, and two-year institutions, gathered data from 1,280 institutions.

The overall median salary increase for all positions was 0.0 percent. About two-thirds of all job holders surveyed received no salary increases in 2009-10.

Modest signs of stability in the shaky job market could be found in the survey’s results. Roughly the same percentage of respondents told researchers that they expect to have “significantly more” and “somewhat more” positions to fill this year as last.

Nearly 6 percent more institutions than last year said they expect the number of positions they seek to fill to remain the same.

The “Administrative Compensation Survey for the 2009-10 Academic Year” can be ordered on the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources Web site.
