American Foundation for AIDS Research (New York): Appointed Judith Auerbach, director of the behavioral and social-science program and HIV-prevention science coordinator in the Office of AIDS Research at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, Md.), to be vice president for public policy in the Washington office.

Amideast (Washington): Appointed Theodore Kattouf, former ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and Syria, to be president and chief executive officer. He succeeds William Rugh, who is retiring. Amideast seeks to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between Americans and the people of the Middle East and North Africa, through development projects, exchange programs, and language and skills training.

Atlantic Council of the United States (Washington): Appointed Lyn Soudien, director of business development in the Washington office of the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (New York), to be director of planning and outreach. The Atlantic Council promotes U.S. participation in international affairs and supports education-exchange programs.

Bay Path College (Longmeadow, Mass.): Appointed Kathleen M. Bourque, director of institutional advancement and corporate and foundation relations, to be vice president for institutional advancement.

Camp Extreme (New York): Appointed Moshe Bellows, president and chief executive officer of Bellows Communications (New York), to be director of development. Camp Extreme is an “extreme adventure” camp for at-risk adolescents.

Foundation Fighting Blindness (Owings Mills, Md.): Appointed Stuart C. Turgel, chief executive officer of the Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital Foundation (San Antonio), to be chief development officer.

Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids (Mich.): Appointed Louise Edison, director of development at the Grand Rapids Ballet Company, to be director of development. Gilda’s Club, named after the late comedian Gilda Radner, provides support services to people living with or affected by cancer.

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (Santa Monica, Calif.): Appointed Felice Apter, senior policy adviser for HIV/AIDS at the U.S. Agency for International Development (Washington), to be vice president of research and programs; Philip Dufour, executive director of the National Mental Health Awareness Campaign (Washington), to be director of development; Jeanne Ireland, a recent fellow in Berlin of the Robert Bosch Foundation, to be director of public policy; and Dodie McCracken, press secretary and district director in the Washington office of Rep. Mark Kirk, Republican of Illinois, to be associate vice president for development. All positions are located at the foundation’s Washington office.

Greater Twin Cities United Way (Minneapolis): Appointed Lauren A. Segal, president and chief operating officer, to be chief executive officer, effective January 2004. She will succeed James C. Colville, who will retire later that year.

Impact Fund (Berkeley, Calif.): Appointed John Trasviña, special counsel under President Clinton for immigration-related unfair-employment practices, to be director of the organization’s discrimination-research center. The Impact Fund develops employment testing and other social-science methods to pinpoint discrimination by employers and others.

Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley (San Jose, Calif.): Appointed Mindy S. Berkowitz, executive director of Congregation Beth David (Saratoga, Calif.), to be executive director.

KUNI/KHKE (Cedar Falls, Iowa): Appointed John Hess, interim director of broadcasting, to be director of broadcasting.

Learning Center (Jackson Hole, Wyo.): Appointed Suzanne Biermann, deputy undersecretary of the Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Washington), to be executive director. The Learning Center provides screening, therapy, and intervention services for children up to age 5.

NARAL Pro-Choice America (Washington): Announced the resignation of Kate Michelman, president of the organization and its foundation, effective in April 2004. Ms. Michelman will become president emeritus.

National Wildlife Federation (Reston, Va.): Announced the resignation of Mark Van Putten, president and chief executive officer. Lawrence J. Amon, executive vice president and chief financial officer, will serve as acting president and chief executive officer.

New York U.: Appointed Lisbeth Diringer, deputy chief development officer for major gifts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), to be director of development for the Child Study Center.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra: Appointed Lawrence Tamburri, president of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (Newark), to be president and chief executive officer, effective in December. He will succeed Gideon Toeplitz, who retired in June.

Project Hope (Millwood, Va.): Appointed Ellen Paquette, regional director for Europe, the Mediterranean, and Asia at the Peace Corps (Washington), to be regional director for Asia Pacific and the Middle East, and Renslow Sherer, chairman of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Breakthrough Initiative on HIV/AIDS (Boston), to be head of the infectious-diseases unit. Project Hope conducts medical training and health-education programs worldwide.

Redefining Progress (Washington): Announced that Michel Gelobter will continue as executive director following this organization’s merger with the Center for a Sustainable Economy (Washington), which is effective immediately.

Sesame Workshop (New York): Appointed Nina Adelson, development director at Comprehensive Development (New York), to be director of domestic philanthropic development; Shagorica Basu, program officer at the National Center for Performing Arts (Bombay), to be manager of international philanthropic development; and Carol Leister, director of individual giving at WNYC (New York), to be director of annual giving.

UJA-Federation of New York: Announced that Sanford Solender died on August 30 in Sarasota, Fla., at age 89. Mr. Solender, who served as executive vice president of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies from 1970 to 1981, helped bring about the 1986 merger of UJA and Federation Campaigns that created the UJA-Federation of New York.

U. of Alabama at Tuscaloosa: Appointed Jeff McNeill, vice president for university advancement, to be head of development in the athletics department.
