A growing number of charities in Southwest Florida and elsewhere are increasing their fund-raising returns by personalizing their direct-mail appeals, reports the Herald-Tribune, in Sarasota, Fla. Donations to local nonprofit groups have grown 20 to 40 percent thanks to the new approach the newspaper says. The appeals are designed with the help of information collected about potential contributors through Internet searches and other tools.
