The Philadelphia Museum of Art will announce today that the architect Frank Gehry’s project for the institution will be built completely underground, reports The New York Times.
Mr. Gehry, famed for his innovative designs, will also renovate the existing museum building as part of a 10-year, $500-million improvement plan. Ultimately the museum’s public space will grow by 60 percent.
Anne d’Harnoncourt, the museum’s director, says Mr. Gehry appreciates the institution’s art.
“Any architect who creates spaces for the art to be within—it’s important that they love the art itself,” Ms. d’Harnoncourt told the Times.
