Philanthropist David Rubenstein gives $5 Million to Refurbish Iwo Jima Statue

Billionaire philanthropist David Rubenstein gave $5.37 million to refurbish the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, the bronze sculpture of the flag raising at Iwo Jima during World War II, The Washington Post reports. The gift was made in honor of Mr. Rubenstein’s late father, a veteran of the war.

Mr. Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle Group, is co-chairman of the Trust for the National Mall and has a history of “patriotic philanthropy.” His previous gifts include a $12.35 million donation to repair Arlington House, the pre-Civil War home of Robert E. Lee that overlooks Arlington National Cemetery, and contributions to repair earthquake damage at the Washington Monument, expand the Kennedy Center, and renovate Mount Vernon and Monticello.

This latest gift was made through the National Park Foundation, the charitable partner of the National Park Service, which maintains the memorial.
