Philanthropist Focuses on What Makes Some Nonprofits Succeed

The New York Times describes how philanthropist Susan Crown gave grants to eight effective nonprofits to analyze the secrets to their success, with an eye to helping other programs replicate their approaches.
Ms. Crown’s initiative, the Susan Crown Exchange, provided $100,000 to each of eight charities that serve at-risk youth. In return for the grants, charity leaders met three times over two years to discuss their work, learn from each other, and discern why their practices were successful.
The experiment resulted in a guide, titled “Preparing Youth to Thrive: Promising Practices in Social and Emotional Learning,” to help other nonprofits improve their programs.
