PHILANTHROPISTS BANKROLL TUITION

March 13, 2006

A group of anonymous philanthropists in Kalamazoo, Mich., have pledged money for a 13-year program that promises to pay college tuition for all students in the Kalamazoo public-school system, reports The Wall Street Journal. The tuition plan, called the “Kalamazoo Promise,” requires only that students live in Kalamazoo or nearby Oshtemo, Mich., graduate from public high school, and attend a public university or community college in Michigan. The donors say they hope to spur economic development by improving education and keeping talanted people in Kalamazoo. (A paid subscription is required to view this article.)
