Philanthropists Work to End Guinea Worm

March 27, 2006

The foundation led by former President Jimmy Carter is nearing a successful end to its 20-year campaign to eliminate Guinea worm, a disease that once infected people across several continents but has been restricted to sub-Saharan Africa, reports The New York Times.

Grant makers such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, companies like DuPont, and a corps of local African volunteers have joined Atlanta’s Carter Center in helping to reduce the number of cases from 3 million in 1986 to fewer than 12,000 last year.
