A Region of Givers provides an overview of giving by individuals, companies, and foundations in Washington, D.C., and surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia. In 2002, 52 percent of private foundations reduced the amount they distributed in grants compared with what they gave away in 2001, according to the report. The majority of nonprofit groups surveyed by the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers in 2003 said that, while fund raising had decreased or remained flat, the demand for programs and services had increased. The report also lists the top grant makers in the region and the causes that receive the most support.
