Placing Bets on Nobel Peace Prize

October 11, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

With the Norwegian Nobel Committee set to pick the winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize tomorrow, there are long odds against some nominees, including several philanthropists, charity advocates, and nonprofit groups, writes Timothy Noah, a senior writer for the online magazine Slate, on his Chatterbox blog.

According to a sports gambling Web site, Mr. Noah writes that the Rotary Foundation has an 18 to 1 shot at winning, the musicians and antipoverty advocates Bob Geldof and Bono have a 25-to-1 chance, and the daytime diva and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey has the worst odds of the three — 50 to 1.

Mr. Noah puts his money on the Buddhist monks who have led pro-democracy demonstrations in Myanmar — though they technically are not nominated.
