PNC Bank and Walton Family Foundation Contribute $100 Million for Public Charter Schools

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

PNC Bank and Walton Family Foundation

$100 million to the Facilities Investment Fund to offer low-cost loans for new construction and facility renovations at public charter schools.

Eli Lilly and Company

$92.5 million over 10 years to Purdue University to back student aid and a research collaboration between the pharmaceutical company and the university that will focus on genetic medicine, intrathecal delivery, and nanoparticle drug delivery.


The total includes $42.5 million to endow a full-tuition scholarship for students in pharmaceutical manufacturing and guarantee internships or co-op opportunities at the company for up to 100 undergraduate students per year.

Utah Community Credit Union

$28.5 million to Utah Valley University toward its $350 million fundraising campaign.

Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies

$10 million challenge grant to the Salvation Army’s San Diego Regional Office to back its new facility that will expand community services, including food assistance and senior meals, and triple existing capacity for shelter and support services for homeless adults.


Tom and Meg Names Family Foundation

$10 million to the University of Puget Sound to endows its athletics programs.

Greater Washington Community Foundation

$9.2 million through its Health Equity Fund to support 32 nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C., that are working to close racial gaps in health and economic development.

New America


$2.3 million to 18 universities and colleges within the Public Interest Technology University Network to strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion in the development of public-interest technology.

National Fund for Sacred Places

$2.2 million to 16 historic churches in the United States. Each congregation has received a capital grant worth up to $250,000 and technical assistance for significant preservation projects.

The fund is a program of Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Players Championship Village


$2 million to the Pace Center for Girls for a three-year program to offer substance-abuse prevention and intervention services for girls and their families in north Florida.

Visa Foundation

$2 million to Opportunity International to provide business loans, digital tools, and technical training to women entrepreneurs who lead small and micro businesses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, and Uganda.

Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation

$1.5 million to University of Pennsylvania and Penn State University for three new nursing programs to use policy, technology, and community engagement to improve the health of marginalized communities.
