POPE AND CHARITY
January 25, 2006
In his first encyclical, Pope Benedict XVI explored the topics of love and charity, surprising some Vatican officials who expected a more controversial topic, reports the Associated Press. The pontiff said in the 71-page document that the church’s charity work is as much a part of its mission as spreading the Gospels. Yet he also stressed that the church’s charity workers should not proselytize in their charity. “Love is free; it is not practiced as a way of achieving other ends,” Benedict wrote.
