Preparing Children for School and Success

February 6, 2003 | Read Time: 1 minute

Set for Success: Building a Strong Foundation for School Readiness Based on the Social-Emotional Development of Young Children is a collection of six papers presented at the Kauffman Early Education Exchange conference in November 2001, sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, in Kansas City, Mo. In her introduction, Lisa G. Klein, the foundation’s senior program officer for early education, emphasizes the value of understanding the social and emotional development of preschool children and designing programs that can adequately prepare them for school. Several essays provide an overview of research on the abilities children should develop through their relationships with parents, teachers, day-care workers, peers, and others—such as intellectual skills, motivation to learn, and “strong socioemotional capacity”—and the connection between developing those skills early and academic success. The report also discusses practical applications of the research, including a case study of a child-care program that sends mental-health professionals to consult with teachers and parents about children who exhibit symptoms of emotional distress.
