Hank Rosso’s Achieving Excellence in Fund Raising, Second Edition
edited by Eugene R. Tempel
This is a revised edition of a book originally edited by the late Henry A. Rosso, founder of the Fund Raising School, a division of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana U., in Indianapolis.
Eugene R. Tempel, executive director of the Center on Philanthropy, presents updated versions of the original chapters as well as several new chapters that discuss new fund-raising opportunities and technological developments.
These essays, which reflect the Center on Philanthropy’s curriculum, cover the philosophical and ethical questions facing fund raisers, as well as practical advice about such topics as how to investigate prospective donors, establish a capital campaign, and plan special events.
Mr. Tempel discusses new challenges, such as an increased demand for the accountability of nonprofit groups, and their growing tendency to rely on income from fees for services, often in competition with for-profit companies, a phenomenon he describes as a “blurring of boundaries.” He also describes a new “supply side” orientation of fund raising, which has meant that many charities are trying to give donors more say over how their gifts are used.
