Profiles of Grant-Making Associations
December 11, 2003 | Read Time: 1 minute
Case Studies of Grantmaker Associations Around the World, edited by Jayne Millar Wood, profiles 10 associations that represent foundations, including the European Foundation Centre, in Brussels; several of the 28 regional associations of grant makers in the United States; and the East Africa Association of Grantmakers, in Tanzania. Each profile describes the association’s history, organizational structure, and governance. The report also discusses how these groups are financed, what activities they engage in, and how they have handled such challenges as finding funds and educating the public about philanthropy. The study, compiled by Ms. Wood, former director of Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support, in Brussels, also includes a list of guidelines for grant-maker associations. The book advises, for example, that groups develop objective and selective membership criteria and that they find ways to keep senior grant makers active as members.
