Project to Plant 1 Billion Trees
November 13, 2006
A Kenyan woman who won the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize for helping to plant 30 million trees in Africa has started a campaign to plant 1 billion more, report Reuters and the Associated Press.
Wangari Maathai said her project will help fight climate change and poverty worldwide, since trees sponge up greenhouse gases, help anchor topsoil to prevent erosion, and provide cheap building material for homes.
Ms. Maathai announced the campaign, which she hopes will be a worldwide movement, as 189 countries met in Nairobi for a United Nations summit on climate change.
