Public Broadcasters Anticipate Budget Fight

In preparation for potential federal budget cuts, National Public Radio, the Public Broadcasting Service, and the lobbying arm of the Association of Public Television Stations have started a new Web site to generate messages to members of Congress, reports The New York Times.

Last year, public broadcasters had to frantically lobby to restore $100-million to the federal budget before it was approved by Congress. Public broadcasters were criticized at the time for making on-air appeals for help from supporters in restoring the federal funds. Stations denied any unlawful spending.

Organizers say they hope to avoid using broadcasting time this year to mobilize support. The new Web site carries a disclaimer that it is “not paid for with federal funds.”
