Questioning Board Effectiveness

August 4, 2005 | Read Time: 1 minute

How Are We Doing?: A 1-Hour Guide to Evaluating Your Performance as a Nonprofit Board, by Gayle L. Gifford, says that simply asking questions is a straightforward and effective way for charity boards to determine how they are performing. Ms. Gifford, a nonprofit consultant in Providence, R.I., describes 34 questions she says board members should ask themselves to evaluate how well they are serving their communities, managing the group’s resources, and working together. In no more than an hour, Ms. Gifford says, board members can make progress in evaluating their work by considering such pointed questions as “How well do we know our community’s needs?,” “Have we given our CEO the necessary support?,” and “Does our board govern and resist the temptation to manage?” and “Have 100 percent of our directors made a gift?”
