Reading Program Among New ‘Points of Light’

Following are the people and organizations that have most recently been named to receive President Bush’s Daily Points of Light Award.
The Points of Light Foundation, a Washington charity, assists the president in making the choices and carrying out the award program. The recipients:
2004. Read-To-Win Outreach Program, Northfield, Ill., a six-week reading program serving minority youths that donates four books for every child age 6 to 14 enrolled in designated Chicago-area schools. At the end of the program, students choose one of the books to keep.
2005. “Visions” Cast and Crew, Teaneck, N.J., who organize and perform this play about the struggle to overcome drug addiction. Company members, who are either recovered substance abusers or friends and relatives of substance abusers, perform the play at rehabilitation centers, hospitals, shelters, youth homes, and prisons.
2006. William Getz, Lewis Run, Pa., who has served various programs of the Boy Scouts of America for 19 years, including work for the Kinzua Bridge Historic Trail program, which provides public service and environmental education at the Kinzua Bridge State Park.
2007. Federal Corrections Institute at Ray Brook’s Inmate Volunteer Corps, N.Y., a program started in 1997 to enlist prison inmates to perform an array of community-service projects. The inmates have recorded books on tape for kindergartners, created ceramic angel and dove ornaments to be sold in fund-raising events, and produced posters for the United Way’s annual fund-raising campaign, among other projects.
2008. Donald Allcorn, Sedalia, Mich., a retired doctor who serves as medical director for the Community Free Clinic, and who provides his former family-care office as the clinic’s home.
