Red Cross Leaders Vow Operations Overhaul

John “Jack” McGuire, interim chief executive officer of the American Red Cross, and Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, chairwoman of the Red Cross board of governors, have outlined an overhaul of the organization they say will be in place by the coming hurricane season, now only 72 days away, reports The Washington Post. The plans come on the heels of one of the busiest hurricane seasons on record and complaints from hurricane evacuees and Congress about the organization’s disaster response.
The Red Cross says it plans to change the way aid gets to survivors, work more closely with religious-affiliated groups, and alter the system for moving supplies. The organization says it also needs to look at its chapter structure. In response to criticism, the organization is holding a “governance summit” at its Washington headquarters today to review the organization’s structure.
