The Red Cross movement is expected to approve a new symbol for relief groups in the Middle East who object to using the traditional cross or Muslim crescent emblem, reports The Associated Press. Israelis have been requesting full membership in the Red Cross for six decades, but up until now the humanitarian group would not allow a new symbol.
The proposed symbol, known as the Red Crystal, is an empty red box placed on the corner of the emblem, and can be used alone or can incorporate the Red Shield of David, a symbol of Magen David Adom, the Israeli emergency-medical service.
