The Red Cross has asked Thailand to continue providing aid to survivors of the December 2004 tsunami, and said that it should take three to five years for residents of the region to fully recover from the disaster, reports the Agence France-Presse.
“The Thai government has done an excellent job in recovery programs in terms of houses, infrastructure and utilities,” said Bhupinder Tomar, head of the Red Cross’s mission for tsunami-recovery program to Thailand. “But people down there are still suffering and (trying) to get back to their normal lives before the tsunami.”
Mr. Tomar said that Bangkok should create job-training programs, and that the Thai government is centrally important to the success of recovery efforts.
