Social network Reddit has promised to give 10 percent of its annual advertising revenue to charity, with recipients chosen by the site’s online community, according to The Huffington Post and TechCrunch.
The firm announced the plan on its blog Friday, saying, “We want to show that advertising doesn’t just support the Reddit platform, it also directly supports the causes and goals of Reddit as a whole.” While Reddit is not yet profitable, CEO Yishan Wong said in a comment on the blog post that it expects ad revenue to rise enough to support the giving.
At the end of the year Reddit will take nominations from users, then hold an election to decide where to make gifts, with the ad money distributed proportionally among the top 10 nonprofit vote-getters.
