Religious Groups Create Disaster-Relief Web Site

A coalition of 10 religiously affiliated disaster-relief groups has started the “Disaster News Network.” The on-line news service provides coverage of floods, tornadoes, and other disasters — both natural and man-made. The goal is to become the place that people turn to for information on disasters, as well as to provide a means for non-profit groups to promote volunteer opportunities and solicit donations.
Last week, for example, the site posted updates on efforts to help victims of Hurricane Mitch, considered the deadliest hurricane in the Atlantic in at least 200 years.
The Disaster News Network is updated at least once daily and normally features 10 articles at a time, as well as a data base of volunteer opportunities. Visitors can search by region for areas and groups that need help.
The Disaster News Network is not the only on-line news service aimed at disaster relief. The American Red Cross, in partnership with CNN Interactive and I.B.M., runs the Disaster Relief Web site (http://www.disasterrelief.org).
