Report Calls for Aid to Increase Use of Technology

May 6, 1999 | Read Time: 1 minute

A group of non-profit technology leaders has issued a report on potential ways to improve the use of information technology by charities.

The National Strategy for Nonprofit Technology, a network of 24 charity leaders, grant makers, and consultants, has been meeting for the past year to discuss how non-profit organizations are using technology. Their preliminary report, “A Blueprint for Infusing Technology Into the Nonprofit Sector,” found that many non-profit organizations are reluctant to use technology and do not understand how it could improve their work. The report also said that non-profit groups lack money and the technological expertise they need.

Among the key recommendations in the report:

* A national Web site should be created to help charities locate on-line resources, obtain information on non-profit groups that provide technological advice, and find other charities that are interested in collaborating on technology projects.

* New tools should be developed to allow non-profit groups to assess their own use of technology and compare their results to those of other non-profit groups.

* A national “technology community foundation” should be created to raise and distribute money to non-profit groups.

After reviewing the comments it receives on the preliminary report, the National Strategy for Nonprofit Technology plans to release a final report at the end of this month.
