The Massachusetts Nonprofit Sector: An Economic Profile, by Rachel Deyette Werkema and Greg Leiserson, is an analysis of the role nonprofit organizations play in the state’s economy. The report finds that nonprofit groups employ more than 13 percent of the state’s work force, almost double the national average. It also notes that in recent years, a time of overall economic decline, nonprofit groups in Massachusetts have added more than 33,000 jobs. Moreover, the state’s more than 25,000 nonprofit groups are diverse, the report says, and include many small community groups as well as leading universities and hospitals.
