Report on International Collaboration in the Arts

January 11, 2001 | Read Time: 1 minute

Finding Common Ground in International Artistic Collaboration presents the methods, processes, and theories explored by members of the Working Group on International Collaboration in the Arts during their November 1999 conference. The first section introduces three case studies representative of the group’s efforts to promote cooperation and unity among artists and arts groups around the world. One of the projects, Songs of Affinity, brought together a Spanish-speaking performance artist from Los Angeles and a singer-songwriter from Angola. The second section summarizes the conference’s five panel discussions. The challenges posed by cultural differences and ways to promote social change through art were among the topics they discussed. The final section contains two papers commissioned by the conference. “The Language of the ‘Home Office’” and “Cultural Globalization and Intermediation Policies” attempt to shed light on the necessity of collaboration among artists and suggest how artists of all types can combine their energies to change the world for the better. The report was published with support from the Ford Foundation, and is the first of a series of four to be issued by the Working Group on International Collaboration in the Arts, which is based in New York.
