Report Questions Tax Breaks for Nonprofit Hospitals With Big Revenues
April 11, 2014
The finances and spending of large nonprofit hospitals that receive tax breaks while earning hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues and paying seven-figure executive salaries are examined in a special report by investigative journalism site 100Reporters.
In an overview article, reporter Rita Healy writes about major medical centers’ spending on compensation and lavish but often money-losing fundraising galas as well as claims that some facilities inflate their reported charity-care costs.
Additional entries in the series look at transparency and opacity in nonprofit hospitals’ charity-care claims, their spending on facilities overseas, and their collections of fine art.
