February 7, 2002 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Tools & Techniques of Charitable Planning
by Stephan R. Leimberg, James R. Allen Jr., Johnine R. Hays, J.J. MacNab, Roger L. Shumaker, Wesley Yang, Randy L. Zipse

This book is a resource guide for people who arrange planned gifts or other donations with significant tax or income benefits. It includes a detailed analysis of each subject covered, step-by-step instructions, sample forms, charts, and information laid out in question-and-answer format.

The book aims to package information in a way that will significantly reduce the time it takes to learn or review the complex and broad-based concepts of charitable giving, writes Stephan R. Leimberg in the preface.

Subjects range from the basic to the advanced, and general topics cover planned-giving techniques, laws, and trends. More specifically, chapters focus on subjects like e-philanthropy, information on the tax implications of planning techniques, and ethical issues in dealing with planned gifts. Each chapter also contains a bibliography recommending related books, articles, and Web sites.

The appendices, which make up roughly a quarter of the book, offer supplementary information such as Internal Revenue Service filing requirements and forms, tax rates and credits, valuation tables, and charitable planning Web sites.

Mr. Leimberg, the lead author, is chief executive officer of Leimberg and LeClair, a company that produces computer software on estate and financial planning.
