Risk Management for Organizations That Serve Youths

November 14, 2002 | Read Time: 1 minute

Season of Hope: a Risk-Management Guide for Youth-Serving Nonprofits, by John C. Patterson and Barbara B. Oliver, explores risks such as child abuse, sexual assault, and injury that these organizations must consider, since harm to young participants during an organization-sponsored activity can have grave legal, financial, and public-relations consequences. This guide aims to explain how organizations can protect themselves and the children and youths who take part in their nonprofit and volunteer programs. Chapters look at many varieties of child maltreatment, including injuries and violence perpetrated by bullies and gangs, with or without weapons, and describe measures organizations can take to reduce the frequency and severity of mishaps that occur on their watch. The publication also discusses the newest risk-management challenge for organzations that serve young people: how to balance the benefits of Internet use against risks such as harassment and stalking.
